Choose Illustrator when the work centers on creating or editing vector artwork. Consider Annotra when you already have drawing PDFs and need a focused workflow for placing patent reference numbers, figure labels, and leader lines. The tools can serve different stages of the same project.
Illustrator: artwork creation and editing
Illustrator is a vector graphics editor, not merely a workaround for adding numbers. Adobe documents PDF creation and an option to preserve Illustrator editing capabilities. That makes the source-file and export settings important to the handoff. See Adobe’s PDF documentation. Do not assume that every PDF received from another source will behave like the original editable artwork.
Annotra: reference-list-to-figure annotation
Annotra imports drawing PDFs and a two-column number-and-description list. The operator places reference callouts and leader lines, works across drawing pages, adds figure numbers, and exports a PDF. This is a purpose-built annotation workflow rather than a claim that Illustrator cannot produce patent drawings or labels.
Decide where your work begins
- You need to redraw a feature or construct a view: start with an appropriate illustration tool or your illustrator.
- You have finished artwork and a reference list: test Annotra’s placement workflow on a representative drawing.
- You already maintain editable Illustrator source files: consider whether keeping annotation there simplifies your existing process.
- You need both kinds of work: agree on the drawing handoff before placing final annotations.
Evaluate an actual revision
Use a non-confidential sample and place the same references in each workflow. Then change one leader endpoint and one repeated reference. Inspect every affected page and reopen the exported PDF in the recipient’s viewer. This is a practical evaluation procedure, not evidence of a measured time-saving claim.
Compare the plans and features you would actually use. This article does not assume that every team needs another subscription or that a specialized tool replaces all capabilities of a general graphics editor. Neither tool by itself establishes consistency with the written application or guarantees filing acceptance.
Need the illustration prepared?
American Patent Drawings (APD) is the patent illustration company founded by Annotra founder Michael Williams. APD’s illustration services and Annotra’s software are distinct offerings; the shared founder is disclosed so you can assess this comparison in context.
